Samuel T. Gomez Award

We are proud to announce the 2014 Samuel T. Gomez Award recipient Mandi Welsh

Mandi Welsh, is a life-long resident of Philadelphia and is currently a fourth year evening student at Temple University’s Beasley School of Law. She works as a paralegal at the Philadelphia Defender Association, where she hopes to begin her career as an attorney after graduating in May 2015. Mandi has always sought opportunities to serve the community, including volunteering at North Light Community Center and various food banks. She looks forward to continuing to serve the Philadelphia community by working as a public defender providing high quality legal representation and protecting the constitutional rights of Philadelphia’s indigent residents. She is also working toward earning a Certificate in Trial Advocacy in order to become the most skilled and zealous advocate possible.

In memory of Samuel T. Gomez, Esq., a Philadelphia attorney whose life was dedicated to serving the underprivileged, disenfranchised and abused, an annual award has been established for law students who demonstrate a commitment and compassion for the underserved through community service.

This award is designed to encourage and recognize outstanding and exemplary community service among law students, regardless of ethnicity, as evidenced by:

  • active participation in a legal services program,
  • advocacy on an individual and/or class action basis seeking equal access to medical care, housing, employment, and public assistance; consumer issues, utility issues and INS issues,
  • advocacy on behalf of battered spouses and other victims of violence, and advocacy on behalf of the disabled and patients’ rights.

Because Mr. Gomez taught at the University of Pennsylvania Law School and graduated from the Temple University School of Law, the award alternates between these two schools.

The award is presented at the annual dinner of the Asian Pacific American Bar Association of the Pennsylvania, in which Mr. Gomez was an active member and through which he was an advocate for community service.
