Nonprofit Partner Spotlight: The Mazzoni Center
Mazzoni Center, one of our Nonprofit Partners, is a multi-service, community-based provider that assists the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) communities with quality comprehensive health and wellness services. They have been aiding these communities for over 40 years, and work to preserve the dignity and improve the quality of life for the individuals they serve.
Mazzoni Center has been a leader in care for individuals living with HIV, opening the first establishment for HIV testing in Pennsylvania in 1985, and continues to provide numerous programs and services to combat HIV/ AIDS, such as sponsoring housing for individuals living with HIV and an HIV related food bank. The Center is the oldest HIV service provider in the state of Pennsylvania and organized the Philadelphia AIDS Task Force (PATF). Mazzoni Center has the only legal services program in Pennsylvania, and one of a select few nationwide, that specifically provides direct legal assistance, for free or at low-cost, to low-income and lower-income, underserved LGBTQ individuals and families. 90% percent of the clients the Center serves fall below the federal poverty guidelines. Through innovation and compassionate care and services, the Center has paved the way for at-risk communities to get the health care and social services they deserve.
Today, Mazzoni Center aids thousands of individuals annually through primary medical care, mental health counseling, substance abuse treatment, legal services, HIV prevention and care, youth support in schools, and professional development. By offering a combination of direct services, public policy advocacy, and education initiatives, Mazzoni Center helps thousands of individuals with information and education on LGBTQ+ legal issues every year. In 2018, their legal services department assisted over 6,000 individuals, including 650 individuals that received direct legal assistance, and strengthened its informal medical-legal partnership, particularly on insurance appeals and name change petitions.
