CLS Chosen as Provider for New Eviction Prevention Project

The problem of eviction in the City of Philadelphia has detrimental effects on the livelihoods of many. Those facing eviction are confronted with broken families, the loss of employment, negative effects on children in school, and increases in homelessness. To resolve this issue, Mayor Jim Kenney recently announced the implementation of the Philadelphia Eviction Prevention Project. Our nonprofit partner, Community Legal Services (CLS) has been designated as the provider for this program and will offer full-time services for landlord/tenant issues.

The Managing Director’s Office and City Council have committed to allocate about $500,000 for the creation of the Eviction Prevention Project. The services provided will also include, “a tenant helpline and website…direct legal representation of tenants, financial counseling,” and more. A few of our nonprofit partners are also stepping in to assist this project such as Legal Clinic for the Disabled, Philadelphia VIP, Regional Housing Legal Services, and SeniorLAW Center.

With this effort, systematic challenges will be addressed and tenants will receive a support system and access to help in their times of need.
