Nonprofit Partner Spotlight: Legal Clinic for the Disabled (LCD)
Legal Clinic for the Disabled (LCD) provides free civil legal services to low-income people with disabilities and the deaf and hard of hearing in Philadelphia and surrounding counties. LCD works to empower their clients and help them achieve inclusion, independence, and justice through quality legal representation that helps them overcome legal obstacles that would otherwise affect their quality of life.
Since 1987, LCD has helped thousands of Pennsylvanians with disabilities. LCD staff deliver quarterly Community Legal Outreach Clinics at two sites in Philadelphia – Associated Services for the Blind and Inglis House with pro-bono volunteers. Their team of in-house attorneys are based at different sites across the City in community-based settings in order to best serve their clients. LCD established Philadelphia’s first Medical Legal Partnership (MLP), which embeds an LCD attorney in a hospital or health center serving low-income persons with disabilities and chronic conditions. LCD staff educates the healthcare staff on how to identify social determinants to health that are legal in nature. This allows the clinical staff to refer patients to the on-site attorney as appropriate, where the patient can receive critical assistance for legal matters.
The Bar Foundation awarded LCD's Executive Director, Linda Peyton, with the 2019 Philadelphia Bar Foundation Award in regonition of her distinguished public interest legal career.
