Nonprofit Partner Round-Up 2/11/20 - 2/24/20
The Philadelphia Bar Foundation funds nearly 40 legal aid nonprofits, all of whom are doing incredible work in Philadelphia and across Pennsylvania for the communities they serve. Our bi-weekly news round-ups highlight their recent activities:
2/24/20 – Carol Tracy, Executive Director of Women’s Law Project, was interviewed about the “Philadelphia Model” of reviewing sexual assault cases that WLP helped develop with the Philadelphia Police Department.
2/23/20 – Mazzoni Center is working with the University of Pennsylvania’s Student Health Services to secure coupons and rebates for PrEP, the HIV-prevention drug.
2/21/20 – The American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania filed a lawsuit on behalf of a Latino man that was illegally stopped by police officers and detained for hours so he could be investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
2/21/20 – Ryan Morris, Executive Director of Philadelphia Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts, wrote a commentary on law.com entitled Copyright Enforcement in the Arts Gets Aid From New CASE Act.
2/16/20 – Nadia Mozaffar, staff attorney at Juvenile Law Center, was interviewed about the difficulties faced by former foster care children in college.
2/14/20 – The American Civil Liberties Union of PA is asking the state Supreme Court to clarify and enforce the rules of cash bail to prevent people from facing life-altering consequences.
2/14/20 – Carol Tracy, the Executive Director of Women’s Law Project, was interviewed about the importance of a new fund set up to help survivors of sexual assault pay for counseling, even if they never reported the incident to authorities.
2/13/20 – Delaware and Pennsylvania may be the next two states to ban homemade guns. CeaseFire PA’s Executive Director Christian Soltysiak expressed support for the ban, noting that homemade guns are just as dangerous as fully assembled firearms and harder to regulate.
2/13/20 – Disability Rights Pennsylvania supported PA Gov. Tom Wolf’s decision to veto a bill that would prevent the closing of two state institutions for the intellectually disabled.
2/13/20 – Nilam Sanghvi, the legal director of the Pennsylvania Innocence Project shared her support for the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s new Conviction Integrity unit, which will focus on reevaluating cases that could have a possible wrongful conviction in small counties across the state.
2/12/20 – Pennsylvania Institutional Law Project is representing a transgender prisoner at a women’s prison in Pennsylvania who is suing the PA Department of Corrections due to inadequate medical training and invasions of privacy.
