Nonprofit Partner Spotlight: Women Against Abuse
Women Against Abuse began as a part-time hotline in the mid-1970s, and it has since grown to become Philadelphia’s leading advocate and service provider for domestic violence victims. Women Against Abuse continues to provide hotline services and crisis counseling in addition to other long-term support and services to survivors, serving an average of 11,500 people over the past five years.
The mission of Women Against Abuse is to serve people experiencing partner violence in a way that is compassionate and fosters their personal growth and independence, and to end domestic violence by educating the community and advocating on behalf of victims. In addition to their 24-hour crisis hotline, some of the other core services they offer include a Legal Center, a transitional housing program, and the only safe havens for survivors of domestic violence in Philadelphia. Due to the pandemic, the needs of clients have shifted, and Women Against Abuse has adapted by representing and educating clients virtually, introducing chat software for clients to get help without having to call, and distributing a Safety Planning Guide that provides tips for staying safe from abusive partners during the pandemic.
